Praying Before I Preach

I thought (hope) some of you might find this interesting. This is the outline of the prayer I pray on a Sunday morning before I'm going to preach. I've collected these lists and compiled them together. I cannot remember where I got them from. As a former English teacher it bothers me that I'm not citing the sources properly, but just know I'm not their creator.

Below is my pre-preaching prayer list with some commentary in green.

Prayers for Preaching

A Prayer of Thankfulness for the Holy Spirit’s Work Thus Far

  • the inspiration of the Word
  • the conversion of the preacher
  • the call of the preacher to preach the Word
  • the character of the preacher to live the Word - both for the past and for increase going forward
  • the illumination of the Scripture in study
A Prayer of Petition for The Holy Spirit’s Work to Continue
  • empowering the preacher in delivery
  • glorifying Christ through the preached Word
  • opening the hearts of those who hear
  • applying the Word to the listeners’ lives
  • producing lasting fruit in the lives of Spirit-filled believers

A Prayer of Faith on the Promises of God About His Word - trusting these as promises

  • God’s Word is Fire - Jeremiah 5:14 ESV
  • God’s Word is a Sword - Hebrews 4:12 ESV
  • God’s Word is a Hammer - Jeremiah 23:29 ESV
  • God’s Word is a Seed - 1 Peter 1:23 ESV
  • God’s Word is Milk - 1 Peter 2:2 ESV
  • God’s Word is Meat - Hebrews 5:12-14 ESV
  • God’s Word is Light - Psalm 119:105 ESV
  • God’s Word is a Mirror - James 1:23-25 ESV

I prayer this prayer with my sermon in mind, specifically praying about specific points of instruction and application in the sermon.

All of these prayers are ultimately for the glory of God and the edification of his people. May he be exalted and His people be fed.

I know some of you pray for me and for the preaching of God's Word at our church. Here is a format that you can follow if you like. And maybe some more of you would be encouraged by this list to pray for the preachers and preaching at West London Alliance Church. That would be great!
