Lord willing, we will start a sermon series on June 21, 2026 that is part of our preaching through the Psalms that has occured each summer since 2017. This series-within-a-series will be on Psalm 119.
I have been very much helped by a book on Psalm 119 by David VanDrunen. VanDrunen is the Robert B. Strimple associate professor of systematic theology and Christian ethics at Westminster Seminary California. The book that he has written on Psalm 119 is Faith in Exile: Psalm 119 and the Christian Life.
The publisher describes the book this way:
In this illuminating commentary on Psalm 119, David VanDrunen offers a fresh perspective on the Bible’s longest chapter, exploring its profound relevance for Christians today. Through careful exposition of the psalm’s twenty–two stanzas, VanDrunen reveals how this ancient text speaks to contemporary believers who, like the psalmist, live as ‘sojourners’ in a world that is not their true home.
I really enjoyed VanDrunen's book and found myself seeing the form and structrure in PSalm 119 that his book--which were originally sermons--lays out for the reader. I expect this small book will wield a big influence on the sermons I preach this coming summer.
